How much coverage do I need? Free checker

Three short tools that estimate how much life insurance, home or renters coverage, and auto liability you may need. Each one shows its working, explains the result in plain language, and runs entirely in your browser.

Life insurance

How much would your family need?

  • DIME method plus an income-replacement cross-check
  • Subtracts cover you already have and savings
  • Shows a range, not a single magic number

Home & renters

Your stuff, your liability, your rebuild cost

  • Room-by-room personal property estimate
  • Replacement cost vs actual cash value
  • Liability and umbrella guidance, optional rebuild cost

Auto liability

Your state minimum vs what you own

  • Your state minimum for all 50 states and DC
  • Limits sized to your net worth
  • Uninsured motorist and umbrella notes

Which check should you start with?

Someone depends on your income or care

Start with life insurance. If a partner, child or parent would struggle without you, this is usually the largest number and the biggest gap.

You rent, or you just bought a home

Start with home and renters. It sizes your personal property and your personal liability, the part people most often underinsure.

You drive and your policy renews soon

Start with auto liability. It compares your state minimum with limits sized to what you own, so you can ask for the right numbers at renewal.

What the checker will never do

  • Ask for your name, email or phone number
  • Send what you type to a server, or save it
  • Sell you a policy or pass you to an agent
  • Hide the formula behind the number

Questions people ask

Is the Coverlee checker really free?

Yes. There is no fee, no account and no sign-up. Coverlee does not sell insurance or pass your details to anyone, because the checker never collects them in the first place.

Does the checker store or send my information?

No. Every calculation runs in your browser with plain JavaScript. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved, and closing the page clears it.

How accurate are the estimates?

They are educational estimates built on standard methods, not quotes or underwriting decisions. They are most useful for knowing which questions to ask and roughly what limits to request. Your real needs depend on your policy wording, your state and your situation.

Why does the life tool show a range instead of one number?

Two common methods, DIME and income replacement, answer the question in slightly different ways. Showing both gives you a sensible low and high point, and the breakdown shows which inputs move the number the most.

Where do the state minimum auto limits come from?

From each state's insurance department, motor vehicle agency or statute, listed with the date we checked them. States do change their minimums, so the table shows an as-of date and links to every source.

Can I use the checker on my phone?

Yes. It is designed for phones first, works with a keyboard and screen readers, and announces results as they update.

Should I buy exactly the amount the checker shows?

Treat it as a starting point for a conversation with a licensed agent or your insurer. Price, health, policy features and state rules all matter, and the right answer can be higher or lower than the estimate.

Who built the checker?

The Coverlee Editorial Team. The formulas and every default are explained on the methodology page, and corrections are handled openly.
